"Don't give up, Don't ever give up!" -Jim Valvano
In Today's Society You Don't Ever Give Up
When I started out on this quest to run the Boston Marathon in November, I was telling my friends to go for their dreams. I set out on the goal by May 1st to raise $3000 for sick children at Boston Children's Hospital and I have nearly accomplished that! I want to thank all of you that supported this campaign.
A month ago I slipped on a sidewalk and dislocated my kneecap and tore a muscle under my left knee. Everywhere I turned I was told nothing I could do but just rest. I never take sitting down as the answer. Thanks to the help of Dr. Brian Landers who has a practice on south street, I am at least back up and running. Thank you Brian for your outside the box thinking to my situation.
I won't be running the 3:20 marathon that I had hoped but I am sending a message to never give up! Today as I write this I can barely make it 4 miles with my knee but I will still be out there running the hills of Boston on April 20th for those children that I promised. I hear many people give excuses as why I should fold up, but assure you that would not be in my nature nor would I preach such a drone example to my children. This whole thing was inspired by my children and a local boy Zack Saurini. I have decided to give back even more by making commemorative T-shirts (thanks to Splatterhouse T's) to my sponsors and all left overs will be sold with proceeds going to Zacks benefit. Zach has Oculo-Ectodermal Syndrome and Jaffe Campanacci Syndrome. Zach had surgery at Boston Children's Hospital on February 4th and has since returned home to Auburn. His benefit will be Sunday April 26, 2009 from 1-5pm at Sennett Fire Department. He is the true story of never giving up! I encourage all of you to never give up during these times and follow your dreams. Even if you have to chase them a little bit slower than imagined!

High School Memo: Never Underestimate Your Actions
Below I am going to attach an email that a great friend sent me. This email really hit home as it reminded me of who I used to be and who I believe that I have become with the help of some good friends. Please take the time to read it and pass it on if you would like. Thanks SPS for sharing this with me today!
High School Memo
One day, when I was a freshman in high school,
I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school.
His name was Kyle.
It looked like he was carrying all of his books.
I thought to myself, 'Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?
He must really be a nerd.'
I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.
As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him.
They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.
His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him...
He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes
My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye.
As I handed him his glasses, I said, 'Those guys are jerks.'
They really should get lives.
' He looked at me and said, 'Hey thanks!'
There was a big smile on his face.
It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.
As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before..
He said he had gone to private school before now.
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.
We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.
He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football
with my friends
He said yes.
We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.
Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.
I stopped him and said, 'Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!
' He just laughed and handed me half the books.
Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends..
When we were seniors we began to think about college.
Kyle decided on Georgetown and I was going to Duke.
I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never
be a problem.
He was going to be a doctor and I was going for business on a football scholarship..
Kyle was valedictorian of our class.
I teased him all the time about being a nerd.
He had to prepare a speech for graduation.
I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.
He looked great.
He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school.
He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.
He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him.
Boy, sometimes I was jealous!
Today was one of those days.
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.
So, I smacked him on the back and said, 'Hey, big guy, you'll be great!'
He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.
' Thanks,' he said.
As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began
'Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.
Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach......but mostly your friends....
I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.
I am going to tell you a story.'
I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the
first day we met.
He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.
He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.
He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.
'Thankfully, I was saved....
My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable..'
I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.
I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.
Not until that moment did I realize it's depth.
Never underestimate the power of your actions..
With one small gesture you can change a person's life.
For better or for worse.

In the Words of Manny Ramirez
In the Words of Manny Ramirez
"I'm Baaaaackkkkk!", or at least I hope so! Running Tipp Hill Saturday in the pace that I did it with my knee made me realize that I am healing at a great rate. The only problem is time. I have less than 6 weeks to be ready to run the Boston Marathon for my team. This leaves me with 6 weeks to strengthen my knee and regain my 26 mile endurance. Easier said than done. I really hope that I am back. Each step I have been really careful and working hard to get back. Most don't realize the 3 hour a day treatments, trips to Dr and workouts just to get back to where I already was 4 weeks ago! Thank you all for your support!
Miles for Miracles
We have raised over $2600 for Miles for Miracles. Some checks are still outstanding to the totals aren't updated. Thank you all for your support! For you I will run it no matter what! Whether I am hurt or not! I will line up for those kids! If I can't go on due to injury then at least I gave it my all! Thank you all!

Thank You to All of You That Ran Tipp Hill
Thank You to All of You
I want to thank everyone that ran Tipp Hill today. There were so many people (2200 runners) that I couldn't find half of you, but we divided and conquered. The T-Shirts were a hit and we got many many people asking where they could get one. I was shocked. I want to thank everyone. Thank you Anne for keeping your faith in me as a friend to run today and I am very proud of you and your gang for running well on a very hard course. Thank you Tracy and Adina! I am very proud of you guys! I knew you would get through your first 5k Adina nice job! You guys somehow snuck past me at the finish. I wish I could have seen it! Haley again thank you for all of your support! You are the most down to earth person on earth! I was very shocked to have caught up to you in the race. That race was tiring. Thank you to Sabrina and her son for coming out and supporting our cause. You were the only ones I saw. I know there were more of you but I never saw you and if you ran it I thank you too! I know I am not too good socially since the accident over a year ago but I am working on it. With great people like you it makes it so much better! Thank you again!
My Run
Today I was supposed to run slow because of my knee but I walked so much and it felt good for the first time in awhile. I went out slow and then somewhere I heard some music playing that motivated me. I just started kicking it in to see if the knee would last. I am not going to lie it hurt like hell. The last mile was horrible but I got through it with a little help from my friends. I dedicated my run today to my friend Jeff. Jeff recently called me and told me that he has been battling MS since 1997. I kept thinking throughout the race how he told me he cannot use his legs and it gave me some strength. The goal for today was to run the hilly 4 mile race in 36:00 due to the nature of my injury. I ran it in 28:58! I said whoa! It must be healing well! Thank you all again for keeping me motivated!

Thanks to My Coaches
Thanks to My Coaches
Today I went and ran 4 miles. Normally that was a snack to me. Since the knee dislocation I can barely run 15 minutes. Today I was determined to run 4 miles no matter what. I ran 4 miles in 34 minutes which is amazing to me now and what used to be creepingly slow a month ago. I have been worried since my knee issue that I won't be able to finish the race. My dreams of running a 3:20 marathon but a month ago are all gone and now its how do we finish what we started? My coach Mike Ferragamo write me simply this, "You will finish the race even if Jeff and/or I have to run most of it with you."
To me that means a lot that I have good people in my corner. People that will probably carry me over the line if my knees seize up. No matter what I am lining up on that line.
